The relationship between tattoo artist Big Gus and Sullen Clothing co-owner Ryan Smith represents a foundational pillar of the Sullen Art Collective. Driven by a shared devotion to Southern California's rich tattoo culture, their creative alignment has yielded some of Sullen's most iconic and timeless graphics.
The professional synergy between Ryan Smith and Big Gus extends back to their early days hanging around prominent Southern California hubs like the OC Ink House. Over the decades, they have continually pushed creative boundaries together. In a historic sit-down at the Sullen warehouse, Gus hand-drew a beautiful girl in traditional Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos) makeup, while Ryan Smith custom-drafted her sweeping angel wings. The resulting mashup became the the 'Sullen Angel' series of tee designs.
